Success Story: Dorina Nowill Foundation

We, at CodeBit, genuinely believe that technology exists to transform people's lives.
This commitment goes beyond speech, proof of this is that, currently, 85% of our clients belong to the third sector. We prioritize projects that generate significant social impact and contribute to the growth and development of minorities.

In today's article, we have prepared an inspiring success story, which reflects part of our partnership with the Dorina Nowill Foundation, a non-profit organization.

Throughout more than 75 years of dedication, Dorina Nowill works to promote the social inclusion of blind and low-vision people.

Among the developed projects are the distribution of free books in braille, in addition to spoken and digital formats, which reach from the final public to more than 3000 schools, libraries, and organizations throughout Brazil.

About the Foundation

According to the 2010 census, in Brazil there are 6.5 million people with visual impairment. Of these, 500 thousand are blind and more than 6 million have difficulty seeing.

The Dorina Nowill Foundation is a world reference in inclusive actions, which provide positive impacts for all generations.
In addition to the production and free distribution of books in braille, spoken and digital, the Dorina Foundation offers specialized services in education, rehabilitation, and employability for visually impaired people and their families, serving thousands of beneficiaries.

During its long history, the Foundation has produced thousands of titles in braille and audio, as well as various digital materials. And, recently, it created the Accessibility Solutions division, focused on accessible products and services in different formats.

The partnership

In mid-July 2022, the Dorina Nowill Foundation trusted our team of specialists for the development of its braille Platform.
The main objective of the project was to scale the transcription and adaptation of books to the braille format, aiming to increase the productivity of the editorial team and, consequently, expand the accessibility potential, through the intensification of the quantity and availability of titles produced by the Foundation.

Technical challenges

Textbooks present various types of nuances, colors, illustrations, diagrams, and structures that facilitate playfulness for sighted children, but considerably complicate adaptation for blind children. To break the visual barrier and ensure clear information, we would need to build a platform capable of linearizing and structuring the data and then, converting it to braille.

Processes and results

For us, mission given is mission accomplished!
We began the work by constructing a braille ecosystem platform optimized for integrated cloud operation, allowing the automation of the linearization process.
The collaboration between development and infrastructure resulted in a significant increase in the speed of the process.

As a result, we significantly reduced the time required for linearization from 30 pages per day to 90 pages per day.
Scalability not only sped up the conversion of books to the Braille format but also expanded access to information and literature for blind people.

After all, each transcribed book is a step toward a more inclusive environment, where knowledge is disseminated without visual barriers.

With the feeling of duty accomplished, we feel immense pride in the project, after all, we know that offering technological solutions aimed at equal access, learning, and knowledge is a way to transform lives through accessibility.
