Nvidia has become the most valuable company in the world, overtaking Microsoft, Apple, and all industry giants by surpassing the 5 trillion dollar mark in market value.

The company was born with a focus on graphics chips for PCs and video games. Three decades later, it influences practically every sector that relies on high-performance computing.

This achievement is the result of a combination of technical pioneering, software dominance, and a strategy that simultaneously anticipated and shaped the current cycle of artificial intelligence.

The origins (1993–2005)

Founded in 1993 by Jensen Huang, Chris Malachowsky, and Curtis Priem, Nvidia's formation is directly linked to Jensen Huang's insight that the future of computing would be visual. In the 1990s, GPUs were experimental niches, but Nvidia, ahead of its competitors, bet that 3D graphics would become part of large-scale consumer applications.

Between 1995 and 1999, the company created a succession of chips that changed the market:

  • NV1 (1995): first multimedia chip sold in volume.

  • RIVA 128 (1997): mass 3D acceleration; over 1 million units sold.

  • RIVA TNT (1998): launch of the multitexture architecture.

  • GeForce 256 (1999): introduction of the term GPU and the first dedicated hardware graphics acceleration.

With these products, Nvidia became the standard for PCs and gaming. It created alliances with major manufacturers like Dell, Apple, and Microsoft and went public (IPO in 1999), securing capital to expand research and development.

In the 2000s, the company dominated the GPU market for gaming and became an essential element for consoles and high-performance computers.

The strategic shift (2006–2012)

Nvidia's structural shift occurred when it stopped looking at GPUs merely as rendering engines and began treating them as parallel computing engines, useful for science, research, and, in the future, AI.

The central milestone was CUDA, launched in 2006.

CUDA (Compute Unified Device Architecture) is a platform/development kit that allows programming GPUs for tasks beyond graphics, ushering in the era of GPGPU (General-Purpose GPU Computing).

A complete set of tools: programming language, libraries, drivers, and a software ecosystem that allows developers to utilize the massive parallel power of GPUs to run scientific applications, simulations, and data processing.

CUDA did for Nvidia what Windows did for Microsoft: it created dependency, standardization, and a closed ecosystem, hard to abandon.

This generated two decisive phenomena:

  1. Millions of developers learned and grew to rely on CUDA, creating software optimized exclusively for Nvidia hardware.

  2. Competitors fell structurally behind because they lacked mature or widely adopted equivalents.

During this period, the first architectures aligned with the new paradigm were launched: Tesla (2006), Fermi (2010), and Kepler (2012).

The birth of AI (2012–2017)

The explosion of deep learning in 2012 with AlexNet (originally trained on Nvidia GPUs) permanently changed the company's destiny.

Suddenly, extremely deep neural models demanded massive computational power, thousands of parallel operations, and sophisticated memory technology. GPUs were perfect for this.

And it wasn't just any GPU: it was Nvidia GPUs accelerated by CUDA.

Between 2012 and 2017, the company consolidated its hegemony by launching architectures increasingly dedicated to AI:

  • Maxwell (2014)

  • Pascal (2016): first deep optimizations for neural models.

The decade of acceleration (2018–2025)

From 2018 onward, AI moved from the lab into consumer use, and Nvidia became the essential supplier of the infrastructure needed for this leap.

Successive architectures elevated computational power, and the explosion of generative AI in 2022, with the launch of ChatGPT, marked the turning point.

The world needed giant data centers, specific accelerators, integrated systems, and the ability to train billion- and trillion-parameter models.

Nvidia had everything:

  • The most advanced chips (A100, H100, H200, B100).

  • The most powerful closed ecosystem (CUDA + TensorRT + NGC).

  • A scalable product model (DGX, GB200, Superchips).

  • Infrastructure sold directly to hyperscalers.

Global cloud services, like AWS, standardized their AI offerings on Nvidia hardware. AI startups (OpenAI, Anthropic, xAI) did too.

To top it off, governments and large corporations built massive AI clusters using Nvidia GPUs as their foundation.

With this, the company ceased to be a chip maker and began providing something much larger: what Jensen Huang calls "AI factories."

This transition propelled the company to the top of the financial markets.

The Nvidia dominance

Cloud providers build datacenters calibrated for Nvidia.

Migrating to another platform means rewriting code, retraining models, and redesigning pipelines. This dependency is structural and is what makes it hardest for competitors to enter.

  • Absolute dominance in a hyper-expanding market.

The market came to see Nvidia as the number one reference, the foundation for the next computational era.

The limits of hegemony

Nvidia's hegemony, though solid, faces a more complex competitive landscape. The company coexists with growing pressure from traditional competitors, such as AMD and Intel, plus Chinese startups targeting specific niches of accelerated computing.

Big tech players, such as Google and Meta, are also advancing in developing their own accelerators, while geopolitical restrictions impose limits on the supply of advanced chips. 

Even so, Nvidia moves to preserve its competitive advantage. In the same way that occurred in earlier phases of its history, Nvidia seeks to define the technological terrain before competitors reach enough maturity to challenge its leadership.


Nvidia's rise to the top of the global market is a symbol of the historical moment we are living in.

In 2025, for the first time, the most valuable company in the world is not a software or digital services giant, but a manufacturer of technological infrastructure for artificial intelligence. This reveals a profound shift in the industry's axis of power.

Nvidia has become central because it occupies the space where hardware, software, and data science converge. It has come to define the pace of evolution for all of generative AI, from foundational models to the data centers that support the scientific, industrial, and cultural advances of this decade.
