The social media ecosystem is going through a phase of intense transformation. The centralization of power in companies like Meta, X (formerly Twitter), and TikTok has generated distrust among users and content creators.
In this scenario, Mastodon has been gaining ground as a decentralized alternative, based on open source and a model that prioritizes the autonomy of its participants. The call-to-action on the official website itself is a provocation: "The social network that's not for sale."
But after all, what is Mastodon, how does it work, and why does its existence bother the tech giants so much?
What decentralized social networks are
Decentralized social networks represent a disruption of the traditional platform model. Instead of relying on a central server controlled by a single company, these systems spread across a network of independent servers, run by different people or organizations.
The creation of this model emerged as a response to perceived limitations in centralized networks: excessive corporate control over content, vulnerability to censorship or arbitrary decisions, and the difficulty of customizing or moderating communities in a transparent way.
The goal was to offer a more democratic alternative, where users and administrators could define their own rules and interaction policies, maintaining autonomy over their data and experiences. Mastodon's proposal
Created in 2016 by Eugen Rochko, Mastodon was one of the first projects to popularize the idea of decentralized social networks. Inspired by the microblogging format, it resembles the old Twitter in its feed design, but operates in a completely different way: instead of a single "Mastodon," there are thousands of independent servers, called instances.
Each instance has its own rules, moderation, and community. Even so, users can interact with each other, regardless of the chosen instance. Today, there are already more than 9,500 servers, bringing together about 8.1 million registered users.
How instances work
On Mastodon, there is no central server. Instead, the user needs to choose an instance to create their account. Each instance works as an independent community, but is interconnected with the rest of the network.

Autonomy: each instance defines its own community rules, moderation policies, and even technical aspects.
Thematic communities: there are instances aimed at technology, politics, art, pop culture, activism, and even local groups, making the experience more segmented.

Interconnection: even if you are on a niche instance, you can follow, like, and interact with users on any other instance, thanks to the ActivityPub protocol.
Decentralized moderation: each instance has local administrators who define and enforce rules. Some are stricter, others more flexible, which sparks debates about consistency and effectiveness.
In practice, this makes Mastodon a federated ecosystem: several independent communities that, together, form a broad social network where the user can choose the environment that best suits their needs.
The connection to the Fediverse
One of Mastodon's great differentiators is its integration with the Fediverse, the ecosystem of decentralized social networks that use the ActivityPub protocol. This means that, in addition to interacting with users from other Mastodon instances, it is possible to connect to different platforms, such as:
PeerTube: an open alternative to YouTube, focused on video sharing.
Pixelfed: similar to Instagram, focused on publishing and interacting with images.
Funkwhale: for collaborative music streaming.
This model allows users to maintain a single digital identity when moving between distinct services, something unthinkable in traditional networks like Facebook or Instagram, which keep their data locked inside closed ecosystems.
In practice, the Fediverse creates a more open and interoperable social internet, where the choice of platform does not limit the ability to connect with other people and communities.
Challenges of decentralized moderation
Decentralization increases autonomy and strengthens freedom of expression, but it also brings a central challenge: how to moderate content effectively. On Mastodon, each instance defines its own rules and relies on local moderators to enforce them.
This model has strengths:
- Smaller communities can create rules suited to their profile, such as instances focusing on science, art, or activism.
- Local moderation is generally closer and more transparent, increasing user trust.
But problems appear at a large scale:
- Large servers, with hundreds of thousands of users, face control difficulties since moderation depends on volunteers.
- Research, such as that from the Stanford Internet Observatory, has already identified the circulation of harmful content in parts of the Fediverse, exposing limitations of the model.
This reality raises ethical and legal questions: to what extent does responsibility fall on local administrators, and to what extent must global coordination exist to ensure a safer digital environment?
The discomfort for tech giants
Mastodon’s growth is happening precisely at a time of wear and tear for traditional platforms.
Elon Musk's purchase of Twitter, marked by controversial management decisions and the intensification of the debate on freedom of expression, generated discontent among users and opened space for new digital alternatives. At the same time, Meta faces recurring criticism for its market dominance and the way it collects and uses personal data, as well as regulatory pressure in different countries.
In this scenario, Mastodon emerges as a counterpoint: a network that does not belong to a single company, does not depend on aggressive advertising, and bets on an open and community-based model.
The discomfort was enough for Meta to launch Threads, presented as a direct competitor to X/Twitter. Albeit centralized, Threads took its first steps toward the Fediverse, allowing experimental integration with Mastodon instances and other networks based on the ActivityPub protocol.
This approach reveals a contradiction: at the same time that it tries to preserve its hegemony, Meta is forced to dialogue with an ecosystem that was born precisely to stay away from the control of big tech.
Curious use cases of Mastodon
Mastodon's influence goes far beyond its independent servers. Some examples stand out for the way open technology has been adapted:
Truth Social (US): the network created by President Donald Trump used Mastodon's open source code as a basis, although it chose not to connect to the Fediverse. This case illustrates the flexibility of the software, capable of sustaining even large-scale political projects.
Governments and institutions: several US public bodies and organizations are already experimenting with their own Mastodon instances. The goal is clear: to have more control over communication and reduce dependence on private or foreign platforms.
These examples reinforce Mastodon's versatility, which can be shaped to serve everything from political initiatives to institutional needs for transparency and digital sovereignty.
The future of Mastodon and decentralized networks
Even though Mastodon is far from the scale of Facebook or TikTok, its relevance grows each year, driven by changes in user behavior. Today, more and more people value:
