The Open Finance system allows clients to choose whether or not to share their financial data among different institutions. Everything is securely encrypted, allowing the new institution to analyze users' credit profiles and other data with greater precision, working to benefit the national economic scenario.

What is Open Finance?

According to the Central Bank, Open Finance is an open financial system that allows clients to share their data and financial history between institutions and move their accounts across different platforms, safely and quickly.

For this to happen, institutions must be authorized by the Central Bank and have the client's due authorization. These institutions will only have access to the user's information and data if they permit it.

In other means, you own your own data and decide when, with whom, and for what purposes you wish to share it. For banks, customer data is one of their most valuable assets. Therefore, it is important to use this information strategically, ensuring that it is utilized efficiently and securely.

In Brazil, the system is regulated under the supervision of the Central Bank. According to Open Finance Brasil, the process is 100% digital and follows strict security standards, thereby ensuring the protection of users' information.

In addition to fostering competition in the sector and favoring the economy, it stimulates the creation of more innovative services tailored to each client's profile and needs. Thus, it improves the user experience, making transactions simpler and faster.

In this way, Open Finance seeks to empower clients, allowing them to have more autonomy over their financial data and to share it securely among institutions.

To access the system, simply open your financial institution's app and go to the Open Finance section. This way, when you enter, you will see a complete overview of your entire financial life as if it were a movie, and you can choose to share this data with other institutions. Likewise, you can cancel authorization at any time.

In short, by choosing to use this system, consumers can gain several benefits, as they can have more accessibility to financial services and receive offers more aligned with their profile. Furthermore, rates and interest can be negotiated to be lower, as there is now greater competitiveness among institutions.

What is the difference between Open Banking and Open Finance?

Basically, Open Finance can be seen as an upgrade or evolution of Open Banking. This is because, while Open Banking is restricted only to banking information, Open Finance includes investments, insurance, credit products and services, and the entire set of financial services.

It is as if the Open Finance system has a movie of your entire financial life, including insurance companies, brokerages, and the entire financial ecosystem, while Open Banking only focuses on banks.

Just like in Open Banking, there are no costs to participate in the Open Finance system, and the client does not have to pay anything when allowing the use and sharing of their financial history.

In summary, Open Finance offers a greater variety of financial data and a more extensive network of participating institutions, thus providing a more complete view of users' financial lives. On the other hand, Open Banking focuses on traditional banking data, such as accounts, transactions, and balances.

What are the benefits of Open Finance for companies?

According to Exame, companies that adopt the open financial system will enjoy a range of benefits. This is because it transforms the relationship between companies and consumers, besides optimizing internal operations and expanding the product offering.

Personalization is one of the main benefits of Open Finance. In this regard, with the system, it is possible to access more complete customer data, and with this, companies can create offers more aligned with the needs and interests of each client.

In this sense, it becomes possible for companies to recommend financial products that meet each user's profile, increasing satisfaction and the relevance of their experience.

Moreover, it is worth highlighting that the Open Finance system helps people who do not have access to traditional financial services to access them, as it has the potential to integrate them into the system, offering more accessible services tailored to their needs, thus promoting financial inclusion.

This system facilitates the inclusion of new clients through data sharing and a more accessible and detailed credit analysis. Furthermore, it can increase competitiveness among companies, since institutions can use this info to offer more advantageous conditions and attract new clients.

Therefore, with more companies accessing and analyzing financial data, services will become increasingly customized, increasing competition and reducing costs for customers.

What is the governance process for the implementation of Open Finance in Brazil?

In Brazil, the governance process of the Open Finance implementation is regulated by the Central Bank, which aims to ensure data security. This governance model is collaborative and involves different financial institutions, such as fintechs – companies that use technology to innovate and offer financial services digitally, in an agile and accessible way - and other companies in the sector, provided they follow guidelines established by the Central Bank.

In addition, Open Finance regulation also defines mandatory and voluntary participants, depending on the size of the institution and the type of data or service to be shared. For example, according to the Central Bank, the largest banks are required to implement the open financial system for data sharing.

The Central Bank has also defined rules to ensure representation and mitigate potential conflicts of interest among institutions. It is worth noting that, according to established regulations, institutions can only share customer data and services if the customer has authorized the sharing. In other words, nothing should be done without the user's consent.

After consent, another step in the process is to go through authentication and then confirmation. The Central Bank reinforces that participating institutions must provide clear and objective information to clients about each step of the process and the procedures involved, including even redirection to other systems, if necessary.

There is also an Open Finance governance structure that seeks to ensure an effective and coordinated implementation of the system. The Board of Directors plays an essential role in this structure, responsible for making key strategic decisions for the project's implementation in Brazil and providing technical suggestions to the Central Bank.

The Central Bank monitors all discussions and ensures compliance with established guidelines. The implementation schedule is strictly followed, and technical standards approved by the governance structure are analyzed and integrated into the Central Bank's regulations or, when necessary, forwarded to the National Monetary Council – another member of the structure - for potential adoption.

What are the main trends of Open Finance for 2025?

In 2025, it is expected that, in Brazil, Open Finance will be more mature and integrated, bringing significant advancements to the financial system. Besides bringing benefits to companies, this project can improve the consumer experience. Among the expected trends, we can mention:

Improvement in financial inclusion: as it facilitates access for people who have little or no access to traditional banking services, generating greater participation in the financial market. Fintechs will be able to offer more accessible financial products customized to the reality of these people who are not served by large financial institutions.

Expansion of APIs and technical standards: with the evolution of APIs – application programming interfaces – a greater integration between different financial services will be possible, thereby allowing startups and fintechs to offer more competitive solutions.

Improvement in the national economy: it can boost the national economy in several ways, promoting greater efficiency, innovation, and financial inclusion. In this sense, it can impact increased competition and lower fees, benefiting both companies and consumers.

Integration between Open Finance and Open Insurance: according to Exame, the integration between the Open Insurance system – aimed at the insurance sector – and Open Finance, will allow financial data to be used to offer insurance adjusted to specific profiles. In this sense, it can result in affordable insurance solutions, for example, for informal workers.

Expansion to New Sectors: the system could also expand into sectors related to retail, healthcare, and even education. In this context, a marketplace, for example, will be able to offer credit to consumers directly on the platform, based on shared data. This project is also known as Embedded Finance - integrated finance - which will gain prominence, allowing financial services to be offered within these marketplace, retail, and app platforms.

Generally speaking, the open system promises to positively impact the national economy, bringing positive impacts to various sectors, with innovations and potential positive effects on the market, making it more competitive and dynamic. Many innovations and changes are yet to come, and the system will increasingly need to be capable of reinventing itself and adapting to new trends.

What to expect from the technological future of Open Finance?

Analyzing the current national context, Open Finance has gained significant visibility and progress, increasingly facilitating companies' entry into the financial ecosystem, thereby transforming the business models of traditional banks, which now face competition from fintechs whose goal is to integrate into this innovative market.

This competitiveness drives the market, and companies can be expected to be increasingly engaged in this technological project. Therefore, considering that technology evolves every day, the need for companies to adapt to such developments, seeking specific solutions and knowledge, is undeniable.

Thus, the system has a direct relationship with technology. Without it, Open Finance would not exist, as it constantly depends on digital infrastructure to connect institutions, ensure security, and improve user experiences.

As a result, the technological future of this system will be marked by advancements that will make financial services increasingly agile, secure, and personalized.

Faced with this reality, AI is expected to drive the future of the open system, while cybersecurity – a set of technologies to protect data, systems, and networks - and data privacy will be strengthened.
