Over the past two years, the artificial intelligence ecosystem has undergone a profound transformation. What began with a market dominated by few platforms (with absolute prominence for ChatGPT) quickly diversified.
Today, generative AI has driven the rise of a new set of AI-native companies, specializing in niches such as productivity, autonomous agents, web browsing, scientific research, development, security, and, of course, search.
It is in this context that Perplexity emerges as a benchmark. Valued at approximately $20 billion and led by a team with stints at companies such as OpenAI, Tesla, and Meta, the startup has consolidated its proposal: to transform online search into a conversational, contextual, and answer-oriented experience, rather than links.
Brazil, which already ranks among the largest AI markets in the world, has entered the company's strategic roadmap.
Discover how this expansion is happening, the company's positioning in the global market, and how Perplexity envisions an innovative future in digital commerce.
A new category of search
Perplexity was founded on the premise of making online search more precise, more contextual, and less dependent on indexed pages. Instead of simply listing results, the platform uses advanced AI models to synthesize, compare, and explain information, offering complete answers with verifiable sources.
Unlike Google, its architecture was designed from scratch for the era of generative models. This includes:
fast inferences with real-time combined data;
an answer model that prioritizes accuracy and reliability;
dynamic contextualization, remembering previous interactions;
integration with large public and private knowledge bases.
This model gave rise to the term "answer engines," one of the most promising categories within the emerging AI ecosystem.
Combining scalability and continuous updates, Perplexity quickly became a strong alternative to traditional search models, especially for users who need organized data, synthesis, and rapid analysis.
Market Expansion
In 2024 and 2025, Brazil entered the top 5 countries that use Perplexity the most, alongside the United States, Japan, South Korea, and Germany. Three factors explain this relevance:
Accelerated adoption of AI by companies
The enterprise segment in Brazil grew by more than 500% in one year, driven by areas such as retail, telecom, finance, and media.Growth of the innovation ecosystem
Large Brazilian corporations are internalizing generative AI into products and processes, making the demand for technologies like Perplexity more solid and strategic.Global movement of AI decentralization
With the opening of units of companies like OpenAI and Anthropic in Latin America, Brazil has become a strategic and competitive hub.
Perplexity has already started the process of hiring executives in the country and confirmed that it will open a local office. Before that, it launched its first marketing campaign in São Paulo, starring Lewis Hamilton, with the slogan "Curiosity Wins."
Perplexity's expansion in Brazil has the direct backing of Valor Capital, an American management firm focused on investments in Latin America. The firm allocated around $105 million to the startup, a relevant part of the more than $1.5 billion raised since 2022.
With annual recurring revenue (ARR) estimated at $150 million, Perplexity is well-positioned to expand its product portfolio, one of which has received special attention: the Comet browser.
Brazil as an AI Hub
The arrival of Perplexity occurs at a strategic moment. Brazil became, in 2025, the third largest global market for ChatGPT and one of the most dynamic ecosystems in Latin America. The demand for AI tools grew both in the corporate environment and in personal use.
This confluence creates a favorable scenario:
more digitally mature companies;
consumers open to new platforms;
an evolving regulatory sector;
increasing availability of talent in engineering and data.
The local presence of companies like OpenAI, AWS, Google, Meta, and emerging startups reinforces this movement.
In this scenario, Perplexity arrives with competitive capital, technology, and timing to compete for space with giants.
Comet: the AI-powered browser
In July 2025, Perplexity introduced Comet to the market, its own browser with built-in AI. It rethinks the web browsing experience with:
native AI search, without relying on external engines;
integrated assistant that reads, summarizes, compares, and interprets page content;
ability to perform autonomous tasks: shopping, reservations, emails, and organization;
intelligent agent functions, connecting actions with the user's historical context;
based on Chromium (the same structure as Chrome and Edge);
simple import of extensions and bookmarks.
Initially available only to Perplexity Max plan users ($200/month), Comet is now entering global expansion. In November, Perplexity launched Comet for Android, becoming one of the first truly integrated AI browsers on mobile. The new features include:
full voice mode to talk about any tab;
automatic summaries of pages and articles;
contextual interaction as the user browses;
promise of history and bookmarks synchronization between desktop and mobile (still in development).
With this, the company positions itself to compete directly with Chrome, Safari, Edge, and Gemini, but with an approach centered on an intelligent and AI-assisted experience.
The competitive landscape of search
Google's near-absolute dominance in recent decades is beginning to be challenged by a new generation of AI-powered search engines. Among them, Perplexity is, today, the most visible and aggressive competitor.
The company adopted a differentiated strategy:
direct marketing, with global campaigns;
strategic partnerships, such as with Motorola, which embedded the Perplexity assistant in smartphones;
integrations with telecom, such as the agreement with Vivo, which brings the premium tool to millions of users;
conversational search, which eliminates layers of clicks;
high frequency of updates, including new agent capabilities.
AI as a mediator of shopping experiences
In addition to search, Perplexity has been investing heavily in a component that should redefine e-commerce: its AI Personal Shopper.
The proposal is to allow users to search, refine, and buy products with AI support that understands context, preferences, and needs.
What changes with this model?
Personalized curation
The agent can connect previous conversations and understand real-use situations.Intelligent comparison
AI organizes products with specifications, reviews, and recommendations based on objective criteria.
Direct purchase
With the Instant Buy partnership with PayPal, users can transact without leaving the platform.
Intent-oriented experience
The focus shifts from infinite lists of links to a real understanding of the consumer's needs.
This shift is still in an experimental stage, but it signals a path in which AI will be a central part of the experience of buying, researching, and deciding.
The advancement of specialized AIs indicates that different segments tend to adopt tools built to solve specific problems with greater depth. In Perplexity's case, the combination of contextualized search and structured information analysis points to a model where online browsing becomes increasingly guided by intent and actual need.
As these technologies evolve, search and shopping habits are beginning
