Front-end and back-end: concepts

Front-end and back-end are fundamental elements in the development of systems and applications. The front-end is known as an application layer responsible for presenting the interface to the user. For this, it is composed of various technologies such as HTML, CSS, and JavaScript - resources used in the creation of interactive web pages, mobile applications, and other systems that can be accessed through a web browser or mobile device. In short, the mission of the front-end is to provide a user-friendly interface, enabling interactions with systems in an easy and intuitive way.
On the other hand, the back-end is known as the hidden layer, or, in other words, the part that handles business logic and data processing. It manages information, performs calculations, handles security authentications, and integrates a software or application with other systems. Typically, the back-end is developed using programming languages such as Java, Python, Ruby, among others.
In practice, front-end and back-end are concepts applied to different layers of a system. Both are equally important for the application to function and, therefore, must be developed together to deliver a complete and satisfying user experience.

Front-end: the applications

The front-end is also known as "the client side," and that is no coincidence. After all, this is the concept that takes into account the entire user experience, and thus, focuses on the structure, layout, content, performance, and responsiveness of a website or application.

Additionally, the front-end is also the part of programming that ensures a website or app is responsive and works well across various device screens.

To develop the front-end of a project, the programmer must rely on the following languages:

HTML - Hyper Text Markup Language:

Language used in creating the structure and content of pages.

CSS - Cascading Style Sheets:

It is a content formatting language that defines the look of a website. Widely used in conjunction with HTML.

JavaScript

The language responsible for creating dynamism in websites and apps.

Back-end: the applications

The back-end is the concept that involves the server, database, and all application layers of a system or app. In this scenario, it is up to the developer to build and unify these elements to ensure all information is aligned and stored correctly, guaranteeing the proper functioning, security, and availability of the tool.
For example, when a user accesses a website, it is the page's server that sends all the necessary information to make it visible and accessible.
This entire build can only be created using specific languages applied in the internal development of a site.
Among the main ones are:

PHP - Hypertext Preprocessor

A scripting language used in programming to create dynamic and interactive web applications.

Python

Used to create dynamic and complex web applications through frameworks like Django and Flask. It is also applied in fields like data analysis, machine learning, and data science, due to its vast amount of libraries and specific tools.

Java

An object-oriented and multiplatform programming language, used for software development in various fields, including web development, corporate systems, and game creation.

JavaScript

Highly versatile, it is used in both front-end and back-end.
In the back-end, JavaScript can be used to build scalable and high-performance web applications and APIs (Application Programming Interfaces), capable of handling large amounts of traffic and processing.

Front-end and back-end: what are the differences?

To illustrate the difference between them simply, we can make an analogy with a restaurant: the menu, the dishes, the table layout, and all visible parts are the front-end, and the kitchen, the chefs, the ingredients for preparing the dishes, and the equipment used are the back-end.
However, it is important to highlight that the roles of a front-end and back-end developer are not limited strictly to languages. The scenario is much more complex and also involves framework tools, libraries, architectures, and software.
