Empathy in UX design: why is it so important?

Empathy in UX design: why is it so important? Find out in the article on the CodeBit Blog!

Empathy is a highly sought-after soft skill in the corporate world. The word indicates the psychological capability to feel what another person would feel if they were in the same situation they are experiencing.

In other words, it consists of trying to understand the other person's feelings and emotions, putting oneself in their shoes, and better understanding their behavior in specific circumstances.

But the truth is that empathy goes beyond interpersonal relationships and even interferes with a user's experience and navigability on websites or apps.

According to Tim Brown (CEO and president of IDEO), “empathy is at the heart of design. Without understanding what others see, feel, and experience, design is a pointless task.”

This skill allows for the understanding of other people's beliefs, values, and ideas. That is, it is the ability to share another person's emotions.

A good example of empathy applied to design could be a designer working on an NGO website meant to help needy animals. If this professional had compassion for animals or had already gone through an adoption experience, they would likely have a strong emotional sense of empathy.

But do you know why this capability also needs to be developed and applied in UX Design processes? Continue reading and find out in this article that the CodeBlog team has prepared for you.

Why do we need more empathy in UX Design?

Empathy is a skill that facilitates the creation of bonds of trust and helps broaden the view of what users might feel or think.

This helps professionals understand how or why people are reacting positively or negatively to certain situations. It also speeds up the understanding of people's pain points and is fundamental to ensuring assertive decision-making in the creation of products, services, or solutions that truly meet the target audience's demands.

On the other hand, from the moment professionals begin to understand users' feelings, it is certain that they can respond to them in a more appropriate way. Thus, an empathetic cycle is formed where everyone works to help each other.

How to improve your empathetic sense in general

First and foremost, it is important to highlight that empathy should not be restricted only to design and limited to users, but rather, be part of the entire business culture and be applied to the team, clients, and stakeholders.

Act with the heart

When dedicating yourself to a project, do not just use your technical skills. Instead, try to get more involved in the user's sensations, as if they were also yours, and focus on solutions for their anxieties and needs.

Ask for feedback

Ask about your relationship skills and be genuinely willing to listen and find out if you really are a good listener. This makes it easier to know where you can improve.

Be curious

From the moment you sharpen your curiosity and start asking more questions, you gain more understanding of what makes people suffer.

Step out of your comfort zone

Always be willing to study, learn, and live new experiences. This makes you more humble, as you will have to learn some things from scratch. Humility is essential for empathy.

Judge less

Everyone has judgments that prevent active listening and, consequently, the development of proper empathy. Try to detach yourself from your prejudices, whatever they may be, be honest with yourself, and work on these areas to optimize your empathetic sense.

How to apply empathy in User Experience Design work

  • Put yourself in the shoes of a beginner user.

  • Focus on the root of the problem (to do this, think, analyze, ask questions, query, and dialogue).

  • Know how to listen.

  • Engage with users. Find out what their stories are and share them with the other professionals on your team.

  • Take user accessibility into account in all the work you develop.

  • Conduct retrospectives with the team to get different feedback related to clients and stakeholders.

Conclusion

More than developing engaging solutions and interfaces, a UX Designer's mission is to make users' navigation more accessible and enjoyable. For this, it is certain that empathy is a crucial skill.

Most professionals are not born ready to meet market demands, but the best ones know they need to look for ways to develop the necessary skills.

For this, the first point is to be aware of what needs to be optimized and then work hard to sharpen your empathetic sense. This way, you will have greater chances of creating real changes that truly transform people's lives.
