That technology is here to stay, we have all already realized. After all, day after day, major companies like Facebook, Apple, Microsoft, and Tesla launch innovations that revolutionize the way we relate, communicate, and conduct our lives.
However, as definitive as all these resources are for the future of life in society, many people still do not know what artificial intelligence is and how it is currently being used by individuals, companies, and even philanthropic entities.
To inform and update you on the subject, the CodeBlog team has prepared a super interesting article. Follow along with us and discover the relationship between Artificial Intelligence and philanthropy.
What is Artificial Intelligence
In short, Artificial Intelligence is a technological resource that allows the creation of intelligent machines. Based on fully technical and specialized research, this tool has become essential in the field of computer science.
In addition, AI also encompasses the programming of software and computers to develop certain traits, such as problem-solving, logical reasoning, planning, learning, and the ability to manipulate and move objects.
In other words, machines programmed to handle Artificial Intelligence have the ability to choose among pre-established alternatives.
Decision-making is carried out based on databases, which are frequently supplied with new information made available by the system itself.
Thus, it is possible to state that the machine "learns" as the database grows, making decisions increasingly complex.
Applications of Artificial Intelligence
Although machines have not yet completely taken control of our lives, there is no denying that they are infiltrating and changing the way we live, work, and relate, with their personal assistants powered by voice commands and other essential technologies involving suggestive searches and autonomous vehicles.
Giants like Microsoft, IBM, and Amazon are already companies highly involved in the development of this technology, which has already started a true revolution.
Initially, industries were the first companies to adopt Artificial Intelligence with the help of robotic parts, used to assemble different types of objects and then pack them without manual help. Acting in the creation of raw materials and final products, robots began to play an imminent role in most factories.
E-commerces and marketplaces also saw AI as a great bet to personalize their sales and create closer relationships with their consumers, using virtual robots and chatbots, which recommend what to buy to customers, according to their past purchases or abandoned items in the cart.
AI For Good: an initiative to integrate Artificial Intelligence in Brazilian NGOs.
Launched by Microsoft in July 2017, the AI for Humanitarian Action program will invest $40 million to harness the full power of AI and contribute to the services and projects of NGOs working in the recovery and protection of children, refugees, and promoting respect for human rights.
The company will carry out the work together with non-governmental and humanitarian organizations, selected through donations, investment in technology, and shared knowledge. The program is part of the AI for Good initiative which, over five years, will invest $115 million in the AI for Earth, AI for Accessibility, and AI for Humanitarian Action programs.
In Brazil, two non-governmental organizations were chosen to be part of the AI For Good initiative. They are:
Mães da Sé
The Organization operates in the search for missing persons in Brazil. Since its foundation in 1996, the NGO has registered more than 10,000 missing persons and helped find 4,952 of them.
The organization plans to create an app that uses facial recognition, developed by Mult-Connect, to enhance searches for the missing and be a great ally in search operations. This makes it much easier to identify a person suspected of being abandoned. The user just needs to use a photo of the potential missing person and compare their physiognomy with the NGO's database for the app to perform the searches.
SOS Mata Atlântica
Created in 1986, the SOS Mata Atlântica Foundation is an environmental NGO that works on promoting public policies for the Conservation of the Atlantic Forest.
The newest Brazilian beneficiary of the AI For Earth program will be able to distribute investments in artificial intelligence (AI), research, and technology across four main areas: climate change, agriculture, biodiversity, and water.
Furthermore, the NGO has formed cooperative partnerships to support the “Observando os Rios” (Observing the Rivers) project, which engages communities and ensures the water quality of rivers, streams, and other water bodies in the localities where they live.
With the agreement, the NGO will apply technology to the collected data, which will be uploaded to the cloud to provide more effective insights for SOS Mata Atlântica's projects, allowing, in the future, to cross-reference database information, such as, for example, on population illnesses, and evaluate the correlation between water quality and epidemic diseases.
Conclusion
Finally, it must be highlighted that although many people still resist technological advancements, especially in the philanthropic scenario, it is time to open up to the future and optimize all processes and services provided, before the market and competition overtake everything that has already been built.
